The reason the real estate market was always considered a sound place to put money was that its growth tracked wage growth in the country. As wages went up the greater home cost people could afford and prices generally increased depending on interest rates at the time. The 2000's was the first time in US history that wages were lower at the end of an economic expansion than at the beginning. As a consequence, under normal market conditions, real estate prices should have been going down throughout the 2000's. Lax lending standards, artificially low interest rates, new mortgage products, and the assumption that illusionary wealth was real wealth fueled a growth boom that wasn't supported by wages. My feeling is that real estate prices should settle back to pre 2000 levels before bottoming out to bring in back in line with current wages in the US (and normal underwriting conditions). The market will not grow until there is sustained real wage growth. The stimulus next year though may result in pushing wages up, thus giving temporary relief to the housing market, but this is a dangerous sense of prosperity if the affects of the stimulus don't last.

After digging this I noticed that the article was written/copyrighted by AP with no unauthorized use allowed and it was on a web site I knew nothing about. Investigating the site a little I found that material on it was not supposed to be made available to the public.I have undugg it to prevent possibility supporting anything that might be untoward. The site could clear things up by publishing a notice that indicates they are authorized by AP to publish AP articles in their entirety as they are, or by not publishing them, or by locking the site down so the public cannot see pages on it and only registered users can - if that is their policy. I am not sure what is going on.
