It's a pretty empty planet. It's most useful purpose would probably be preserving the human species for a few years. (If the earth were destroyed by asteroids or a dozen other apocalypses.) Of course with current technology we'd run out of oxygen and other resources pretty quickly.
Yeah, "Mononoke" was really just a violent fantasy movie tied in with a lot of well-done thematic elements (i.e. feminism, the environment, heavy industry, etc.). It was pretty obviously an "animated movie for adults". Whereas spirited away could be seen as almost child-like in its portrayal; I mean, really, it almost looks like a beautifully drawn picture book! But the film itself holds some very subtle aspects that only an adult would understand.

“The specialist also claimed that in the future cars will be made out of delicious candy, people will be able to sprout wings on their backs so they can fly where ever they want, and all the radio stations in the world will broadcast Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas all day long.He was subsequently dragged off to the home for the clinically delusional where the nice men in white suits are giving him the best of care.

Very well said itofts. It's liberating to be so unapologetic about your worldview, isn't it?One of the primary reasons that educated people tend to be liberal is that educated folks are more intellectually honest with themselves, and more readily recognize the cognitive dissonance in much of the Republican platform. How can you be for small government and greater rights of the individual, and simultaneously feel it is your moral obligation to prohibit interracial marriage between consenting adults? How can you fund two wars based on 3,000 deaths in the 9/11 attacks, but refuse to fund the much lighter burden of universal healthcare when 45,000 Americans die from lack of it each year? How can you read the New Testament accounts of the Roman persecution of Jesus and his followers, then repeat those practices throughout history with respect to every minority group??
I can turn a pound of potato chips into effective all day ethanol fuel. they should consider using them first. |

Rising home prices are a good thing because the vast majority of most americans' wealth is in their homes. So if real estate prices are high that means you can buy a house, live there a few years, sell it for a profit and buy a nicer house. Rising home prices are what make the "property ladder" effect work. It's not healthy, however, for there to be an infinite increase with no drop. The housing market used to be a more insulated and local thing. The market in my city might be up while yours was down. These days it seems to be much more connected and while it's not really a mystery, there's no single accepted answer for why that is the case now.

The rulers of Saudia Arabia are scum. They build dozens of castles every year while their people live in poverty. Now they are profiting from religion...
