After living in Japan for a few years and being used to having on-time trains and time tables, I actually set my clocks and watches to their clocks. I was never late for anything because of their strict departure and arrival times. Only once was the train was actually late (typhoon winds were so high, trains were required to travel a bit slower) I was presented with an official JR "Late Pass" and an extremely apologetic JR customer rep. My boss was really pissed I was late, but after handing in the Late Pass, he lightened up and was surprised the trains were actually late. He noted that trains will actually drive faster to compensate for running late, but due to the extreme typhoon winds that was not possible.I now live in the DC metro area and taking the metro into DC is a real crap shoot. They don't even post time tables... that was my first clue something was wrong. Sometimes I get can get from Vienna to Metro Center in 40 minutes or up to 1 hour 15 minutes. I've even started showing up much earlier to compensate, but more often than not, I'm still late to work because the train sits at the platform for several minutes. You'd think they make up the lost time by driving faster, but that won't happen. I asked the train conductor why they don't do this and the answer was... "We already drive as fast as the train can go..." /facepalm...
