People are looking for precision from well researched chaotic system (example http://tiny.cc/m2pND ). A US commuter train with 12 cars that on average sit 156 people per car, plus standing room, will make 1200 to 2000 people per train. A commuter train (not rapid transit such as undergrounds) runs 21 to 51 minutes in front of and behind with the same numbers of people during peak commute hours. And at least one of those passengers is going to waddle on the train like a slug and hold up 1199 other people while shoving a fist into a Mcdonalds bag and holding the door open while it's trying to close. Then there is the legitimate hold ups such as a wheelchair lift assist, school groups, and emergencies. There are so many variables and the trains so often run within 8 minutes of their schedule. I find it amazing it works at all.The train can't speed up to make up for time because the train systems are already at peak capacity and must maintain a distance behind the train in front as well keep within a speed limit they were already at. They cannot break NTSB rules because fat ass dropped his fries.If you're not on the platform 12 minutes ahead of time you should have no expectation of making the train. If you do, you're just lucky. If you don't, welcome to the chaotic universe the rest of us deal with.If you really are bad at making the train every day, plan a daily event that is 35 minutes before the train, and make this daily ritual as important as the train. I go to the corner store to get a paper, snack and coffee. This is my deadline. If I miss that I can skip the paper and coffee and go straight for the train. The universe is chaotic, but sometimes it gives you time for a donut. or fries.
