Lenticular Sky

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My goal is to build a visual dictionary within my landscapes that have a defining clarity of location, time and mood. I paint where the ocean and earth meet the sky. The outer Cape is very familiar to me and my landscape of choice. It is a symphony of places and moods. I am drawn to it in every season, but more so in the fall and winter. There is where I experience the stripped down marine moments and the paradoxes that play out in full fury or in peaceful stillness. It is a concert of contrasts. I want to create a visual composition on canvas of the stark, ominous and elemental natural beauty found in its sand, sea and sky. I try to seize the light, moisture, color and mood. I use memory, experience, research and imagination. When I am working I choose elements of painting that will help me reach a goal of connecting, whether through strong use of obliqes, tonal color or quiet lines. The process is a journey of choices. Often the choices are made intuitively, somehow “understanding” what notes come next. Each painting is like learning a new dance..........either I learned it right or I got it wrong. My passion is looking forward to the solitude, production and discipline of painting. It means being in my studio for long periods of time, using wonderful tools of expression. I love the challenge of making a personal statement as clear as I can. I am constantly thinking to myself that “less is more”. When I understand myself and know my subject well, my personal response is in the painting; that which is within me. My studio is located in the former Underwood typewriter factory in Hartford, CT. I also paint in a studio in Truro, MA. I have been coming to this “spit of sand” on Cape Cod since I was a child. I divide my time equally between Hartford. CT and Truro, MA. I am represented in Provincetown by Thanassi Gallery.
