Juror's Statement
"Thank you for the invitation to participate in the Connecticut Women Artists exhibition at Arts Center East in Vernon. It was more than a pleasure to take a long, thoughtful look at such a range of artwork. In person, I was even more deeply impressed by the generosity of spirit and the eloquence of the artists and their artwork than I had been in the online review.
It was difficult to make selections. I was attracted by the whole-hearted devotion of all the artists to their work. This was evident in the intense explorations I saw of various techniques and mediums: the intense focus on the imagery in representational works and the gallant explorations of non-objective compositions. I especially appreciated the variety of mediums, everything from oil and watercolor paintings to collage, found objects, clay, monoprint, and fiber. This is a refreshing scope of creative expression.
I also noted a high degree of humor in several of the works on display. In the pressure of creative work, particularly in the aftermath of a pandemic and the world of hurt it has brought to so many, it can be easy to lose sight of joy. I was impressed by and grateful for the number of works that managed to express lightheartedness with tremendous skill and fluency.
We in the arts face unprecedented challenges right now. Thank you for rising to the challenge of seeing beyond the day-to-day and bringing your talents to bear on a broader vision."
