Liz Egan
Featured Artist Working in Printmaking

I received my BFA in Painting from Purchase College, NY, in 1981. After years of exploring life, I returned to college and received my master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from Buffalo State College. In 2002, I received my K-12 certification.

I use my love of painting to dissect and understand compositional elements, inaugurating a process of identifying the essential color/shape elements that communicate the connection between nature and perception. Although many of my images have representational underpinnings, my focus is on communicating the feelings experienced by imagery rather than on simple representation. I have developed a personal language of printmaking, combining and layering multiple methods of silkscreen, woodcut, monotype, and trace monotype to challenge and build imagery. My process of learning is to respond to a print by asking the question “what does it need,” take a risk by attempting the “what if?” and to grow my practice through the result. I work in small editions of 4-6 and let each print differentiate as needed.

My love of large-scale painting has also led me to complete numerous mural projects, installations, and theatrical set designs. I feel as though I have lived many professional lives. I have been a non-profit arts administrator and consultant at numerous organizations. As an Art Teacher on the Connecticut Shoreline, I developed an award-winning sequential curriculum for grades K-12 and presented workshops at regional and national conferences in art education methods and techniques. I developed my own label of hand-printed fabrics and apparel, Liz Unleashed. My passion for painting, my professional experience in non-profit arts administration, and commitment to community development led me to help revitalize a 70-year-old community arts organization. I enjoy giving workshops and demonstrations. My work can be viewed on my website by clicking the link below.
